FUN DAY AT CHILDCARE 🤗👩⚕️👶
Today I spent the morning with the beautiful children and teachers at Montessori Academy Childcare Centre roleplaying doctor check ups. Although the toddlers were only 2yo I was very impressed by their attention and participation. Thank you to the team at Smithfield for the great opportunity!
Routine health checks for children: * Newborn checks: this would happen by the paediatrician post delivery in the hospital then again by your GP usually at 1 week of age (ofcourse time can differ). What we are looking for is to see how mum/dad is coping, how baby is going: feeding, peeing, pooping, sleeping or lack of. We check the weight, length, head circumference, skin, fontanelles, eyes, ears, mouth, fingers, feet, heart, lungs, hips, reflexes, pulses and perineum. Usually this is a good time to go over any concerns or questions parents may have. Especially important for first time parents and you're world is totally flipped upside down! * 6-8 weeks, 4, 6, 12,18 months:
These checks usually coincide with the Australian National Immunisation Schedule and is followed by vaccinations. For parents who conscientiously object to vaccination I still recommend the health checks at these times. Although similar to the newborn check, developmental milestones are assessed eg can baby smile? Roll over? Walk? * 4yo check: Often a good opportunity to assess children before starting preschool/school and any concerns parents may have.
Although the above are routine health checks parents are always encouraged to bring their children to the GP for any concerns no matter how big or small. Children have little reserve and can fall ill very quickly so require prompt review. For any parents out there please don't forget there is no such thing as a stupid question and you will always know your child the best so if you are concerned about something there is reason 😊
