The first 6 weeks at AKU starts off with an amazing HASS program (Humanities and Social Sciences) where the University aims to holistically develop all of us in various aspects. These pictures is a snippet of what it was like. At the very end of the programme, we had to present everything we learnt. Therefore we had photography displays, calligraphy display, musical performance etc.
We were taught 3 mandatory subjects:
1) Religions of Pakistan
Note, it wasn't called Islamiyat, but rather religions of Pakistan. This was to ensure we were aware and taught of the numerous religions that exists in Pakistan apart from Islam. It was an extremely detailed course where we were initially given an overview of each religion and sect and ended with us making a presentation.
2) Pakistan Studies
In this subject we tended to have more an open discussion style of learning where the teacher would bring up a topic and we'd share our perspective and thought of it. We were grouped and had to present our ideal constitution and answer any criticism brought up by our fellow classmates. This was extremely fun!
3) Urdu Communication
In these classes, we were given a list of diseases and and ailments in Urdu which we were expected to learn and had this Doctor-Patient role play sessions where we 'acted' as doctors and patients in Urdu. This definitely helped all of us as Medical words in Urdu doesn't come up to our mind immediately.
And then we had the optional (we had to chose before it started) subjects.
1) Languages, including French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.
I had Japanese. All of us were taught the alphabets and basic greetings and communication in that language.
2) Photography, Filmmaking, Calligraphy and Art, Painting.
These were extremely fun and everyone seemed to enjoy these. I had photography, so we were taught Photoshop, handling a DSLR and various photographic techniques.
3) Finally there was Law, Social entrepreneurship, Art of Learning,Anthropology and English literature
I had art of learning and we were taught how to study, how to relax and all techniques for a more efficient way to live.
