Make sure you extend your leg right to the top! This is to hit all of your quads. Not extending right to the top with creat imbalances later on down the line! I'm not going too in-depth but you'll be missing out on that 'teardrop' if you don't! That one right above the inside of the knee! — Beginner to Advanced Bench Progression A horizontal pressing movement is a foundational part of most strength training routines. Depending on the individual will determine which horizontal movement you choose though. Today I plan to break down a progression protocol I use for a client to develop the skills to perform a barbell bench press. Depending on the client’s starting point will determine where along the progression scheme they start. If a client is in the very beginning stages and never been in the gym I like to start them on a single arm (SA) incline DB press. I like this movement because with it being a single arm movement you can concentrate on one arm at a time to nail down the proper bar bath. I like the incline over the flat version because a common problem with beginners and even intermediate trainees is when they press up their shoulder blades come protracted. Placing them at an incline naturally puts the shoulder back and then from there I’ll cue to press 95% of the way up until they can learn to control their scapula fully. After a block or so with the SA incline press I’ll progress them by adding the 2nd dumbbell to the movement. Depending on the trainee will determine if we keep this movement at an incline or flat. Finally, once the trainee has the strength and competency to handle a barbell we will move over to either an incline or flat barbell press. I lean more towards the incline barbell for general strength and overall hypertrophy, but I work with the clients goals in mind first to determine exercise selection. Don’t be afraid to try new lifts like me. We all tend to stay in our comfort zones, injuries are scary and I am no stranger to them. Best advice for a new lift is to go light, put your ego aside and focus on form until you’re comfortable enough to add weight. I love to take videos so I can critique myself on where I’m lacking, and fix from there.
