So the Oscars just happened, and as a film reviewer on the internet I’m legally obligated to talk about them (failure to do so results in an immediate execution). So with that threat looming over my head, its time for an all new QUICK FIRE REVIEW: Oscars Edition!!! Also, for some of the categories I didn’t really have anything to say, so I didn’t say anything. Just a heads up.
Best Original Song: “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again“ - Elton John, Rocketman
Not my favorite of Elton’s songs, but good nonetheless. Surprised “Into the Unknown” didn’t win though.
Best Original Score: Hildur Guðnadóttir, Joker
Of the two motif heavy scores nominated this year, why did they have to choose this one? It sounds like a bass drum, cello, and cowbell were thrown into blender and then mulched. Come on Academy, Desplat should have won. His score actually sounds like music
Best International Feature Film: Parasite
Let’s go! I mean to be fair no one expected anything else to win for this category, but it’s still awesome!
Best Makeup and Hairstyling: Bombshell
Best Visual Effects: 1917
...also how? I mean, sure, I love 1917 and the effects looked nice, but they didn’t seem spectacularly groundbreaking to me. I feel like more of the tension was carried by the direction/music/cinematography rather than the effects
Best Film Editing: Ford vs Ferrari
Best Cinematography: 1917
I think they definitely deserve this Oscar though.
Sound Mixing: 1917
I always expect the space movies to win. Although I can’t say 1917 didn’t warrant this because it definitely did! It’s just another one of the five categories I always get wrong in Oscar bingo 😢
Sound Editing: Ford vs Ferrari
Documentary Short: Learning to Ride a Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)
Documentary Feature: American Factory
Best Costume Design: Little Women
I mean what did you expect? Didn’t you know old dress=Oscar?
Best Production Design: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Valid choice, this thing looks like it was plucked right out of the ‘70s.
