W H A T ☽ I S ☽ S T R E S S? We are all facing the same external stressor right now. Yet some people are thriving while others are profoundly struggling. Most of us imagine what our lives would be like if only we didn’t have the stress of covid19, money, our relationship or lack thereof, our kids, our sick parents, or whatever the BIG thing is in any given moment. But we spend much less time fantasizing about what our lives would be like if our tolerance for stress were higher so the things that feel stressful now no longer had the same impact. This is stress resilience, and we can create it. Stress is the experience of external pressures being greater than your internal resources. It’s incredibly subjective. What one person finds stressful, another does not. This is due to differences in how internally resourced we each are as well as our differing levels of external pressures. When external pressures routinely outweigh internal resourcing, we get sick. This type of chronic stress suppresses immunity and creates energetic stagnation which disrupts basic healthy functioning of the autonomic nervous system: impaired circulation, nitric oxide production, peristalsis, inflammation regulation, and on and on. Disease begins here. Fortunately, we have so much power to keep ourselves well. There are two key ways you can feel more relaxed on a daily basis and avoid the harmful effects of “stress". Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right. Today we’re going to do some heavy-duty demolition on your limiting beliefs, so you can replace them with beliefs that make you feel calm, confident and capable. You have thousands of beliefs that have been surfing your brainwaves, largely unchecked – until now. You probably picked these up from your parents, your school, friends, colleagues, media, the press, but that doesn’t mean that they’re valid, or even that they’re helpful to you. In fact many of the beliefs you’ve been thinking up to now are the reason you’ve been creating for yourself stress, anxiety and depression. This really isn’t your fault, but it’s time to change. Self-awareness is important. Once you know what you’ve been thinking and believing, you can check if these beliefs are serving you or if they need to be changed, to make room for something more positive & helpful. Think of a belief as a balloon. Creating & maintaining a belief takes effort – it’s an active process. You don’t just think it once and ‘hey presto you have a belief’. You have to keep thinking it to keep the belief ‘alive’. The bigger the balloon (or belief) - the more effort needed to keep it inflated. No matter how well you tie a knot in the balloon, they deflate after a few days. Same for beliefs… if you just left them alone for a few days, stopped thinking about them, stopped ‘blowing air into them’, they would eventually disappear. Balloons deflate, beliefs disappear - without active input from you. To change ANY belief, stop thinking the unhelpful thoughts & replace them with something more powerful and helpful. What do you WANT to believe? If you’ve been thinking ‘bad weather makes me miserable’: STOP. Replace this immediately. Don't blow any more air into this balloon, and instead put effort (& yes, it takes effort) into generating a new belief. For e.g., ‘I influence my own mood, regardless of the weather’, or, ‘I’ll have a great day despite the rain’. The evidence to support this new belief is the fact that you DO learn to have a great day. The new belief becomes your norm, and you feel more powerful. Simples! #thrivingathome

We’ve provided a $350,000 grant to our partners at the Enterprise Center to power The Grow Philadelphia Small Business COVID-19 Resilience Fund, which will support minority-owned contractors and related small businesses affected by the pandemic. Resilience Dispatch - April 3rd - Day 16 Imagine walking up to this door and knocking. Who answers? What does this person look like? What is their story? Is it an ancient healer with sacred medicines to give? An artist? A musician? Someone from your past? As someone who has written novels for the last 25 years, I make my living from using my imagination. I create characters and tell their stories nearly every day of my life. I feel not only fortunate to get to do this, but also honored. I truly value my imagination. For me, imagination is resilience. However, my imagination is different if I wake up at 3 am than it is in the light of day. At 3 am, if I’m not careful, I can imagine the worst. I have to consciously choose to use my imagination in a way that edifies instead of terrifies. During this challenging time, I think we all must make the choice to try to stay positive. It is up to us whether we imagine the person behind the door is someone who wants to harm us or help us. My vote goes to the person who wants to help. From the trenches of parenting a teenager, a message about finding empowerment in really shitty circumstances⠀ ⠀ A mentor once told me to share from scars and not from open wounds but I'm going to throw that out the window for now. Because as much as my heart is breaking, I’ve had some breakthroughs in the last couple of days that are worth sharing.⠀ ⠀ So to lay the scene without telling the full story, my daughter is really struggling. We will call it self-harm in the broad sense of the term. ⠀ ⠀ Here’s what I am learning about how to respond when a loved one is struggling:⠀ ⠀ Let emotions fully surface and the reality of the situation sink in. It’s easy to deny ourselves the truth of what we are experiencing. Especially if its painful, which duh, it almost always is. ⠀ ⠀ Keep showing up. When things are hard people isolate themselves and things are hard for you too so a common response is to hide until something shifts. Again, face the truth of whats going on and continue to confront it. ⠀ ⠀ Confrontation is not the bad guy. Anger, firmness, voice raising all have their place. Let emotions surface but you ALSO express them. There's a difference between lashing out and calling someone out on their bullshit. Letting your anger be known will help the other person get some perspective. ⠀ ⠀ Commitment while being unattached. If you are attached to a certain outcome it’s easy to get let down if it doesn’t happen. If you're committed to it, you will continue to show up for that same outcome while not beating yourself or others up along the way. ⠀ ⠀ Ultimatums are really just setting your own boundaries. Example- “If you continue to act like this, I am not going to be able to have you in my life anymore or in this way.” Get clear on your boundaries and your needs- “From here forward I need you to do A,B, and C so I can continue supporting you” ⠀ ⠀ Ask questions that help them reclaim their power “Is this the life you want to be living?” “Is this the kind of relationships you want to have with me?” “How can I support you?”⠀ ⠀ Cont. in comments 👇👇👇 Photo cred @olivia_ashtonn ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

The times were experiencing right now are difficult for a lot of people, even me. We are all grieving what’s happening around the world. The 7 stages of Grief are: 1. Shock or disbelief 2. Denial 3. Bargaining 4. Guilt 5. Anger 6. Depression 7. Acceptance and hope Whatever stage you’re currently in, feel it fully. Let yourself process it. I’m to the point where I’m learning to accept what’s happening in the world. I have hope that we can all come together, as a country and world, and move through this as best as we can. “More than meets the eye” There’s so much that I miss about being around people; working closely with purveyors that I not only admire but who were and are the source of so many of the interesting raw materials that fuel our creative process. In times of uncertainty, we experience increased needs for comfort and control. We all self-soothe in different ways to master fear and uncomfortable feelings by engaging in coping behaviors. . . . . Some ways of coping (ie abusing drugs and alcohol, gambling, bingeing on video games or online shopping) can lead to addiction cycles. These behaviors make us feel better in the short term; However, they produce an even greater need for comfort and control that perpetuates the unhealthy coping behavior. . . . . If you pay attention to how you are self-soothing, you will find that healthy coping behaviors (ie meditation, exercise, gratitude journaling, going for a walk, cooking, calling a friend) lead to an increase in our sense of comfort and control that not only lasts but creates momentum for more healthy behaviors. Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right. Today we’re going to do some heavy-duty demolition on your limiting beliefs, so you can replace them with beliefs that make you feel calm, confident and capable. You have thousands of beliefs that have been surfing your brainwaves, largely unchecked – until now. You probably picked these up from your parents, your school, friends, colleagues, media, the press, but that doesn’t mean that they’re valid, or even that they’re helpful to you. In fact many of the beliefs you’ve been thinking up to now are the reason you’ve been creating for yourself stress, anxiety and depression. This really isn’t your fault, but it’s time to change. Self-awareness is important. Once you know what you’ve been thinking and believing, you can check if these beliefs are serving you or if they need to be changed, to make room for something more positive & helpful. Think of a belief as a balloon. Creating & maintaining a belief takes effort – it’s an active process. You don’t just think it once and ‘hey presto you have a belief’. You have to keep thinking it to keep the belief ‘alive’. The bigger the balloon (or belief) - the more effort needed to keep it inflated. No matter how well you tie a knot in the balloon, they deflate after a few days. Same for beliefs… if you just left them alone for a few days, stopped thinking about them, stopped ‘blowing air into them’, they would eventually disappear. Balloons deflate, beliefs disappear - without active input from you. To change ANY belief, stop thinking the unhelpful thoughts & replace them with something more powerful and helpful. What do you WANT to believe? If you’ve been thinking ‘bad weather makes me miserable’: STOP. Replace this immediately. Don't blow any more air into this balloon, and instead put effort (& yes, it takes effort) into generating a new belief. For e.g., ‘I influence my own mood, regardless of the weather’, or, ‘I’ll have a great day despite the rain’. The evidence to support this new belief is the fact that you DO learn to have a great day. The new belief becomes your norm, and you feel more powerful. Simples! P.S. See you Monday

This is my little workspace right now. 💻.
