Understanding our signs of burn out, or overwhelm is an essential skill to manage a happy and joyful life. Kids are notoriously bad with awareness. They can feel very overwhelmed, and can often feel anxious especially at the beginning of the new school year or burnt out at the end. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is normal for children to feel flat or be more tired during the first few weeks of school. Kids and adults are no different, getting back into the routine of school after an enjoyable and relaxing holiday break is hard. It is important to have a discussion with your child during or prior to term 1 commencement about how normal it is to find it hard to move back into school mode. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Step 1. Discuss early warning signs with your child. Pay attention to your own behaviour. Children look to their parents as role-models and the mirror on how to feel and act. If you are feeling overwhelmed and agitated your child will pick up on this. Pt 1/2 🍊"It’s really a lot about your attitude." 🍊 @annakglass #explorewithtree . . . I wouldn’t really recommend orange picking unless you were out of other options or had a strong mindset about it. We had just been on a cherry farm in Victoria in a beautiful lush mountainous location. We spend 1.5 weeks there and suddenly on Christmas Day, the farmer tells us there isn’t more work there and we have to find somewhere else to go. . We quickly found the orange farm and drove 9 hours from Victoria to South Australia through the vast land of black sand. The work was through a contractor who had contracts with different orange farmers in the area. We would start work at around 6 in the morning. . The orange trees are very tall and bushy, so you really have to get in there to get all the oranges off the tree. We used ladders. The ladders would rest on the branches of the tree. Sometimes you would hear the branches crack beneath you or you’d be standing on top of the ladder reaching for the oranges on the very top of the tree and almost lose your balance. Or we’d be climbing the trees from the inside. Fortunately, we didn’t fall off but it’s very risky. And our arms and hands would be all scratched up from the pointy branches. We’d drop the oranges into a piggy bag we wore around the waist and once we’d filled it up, we’d drop it into the bin. We’d work around 6-7 hours a day and fill up around 4 bins between me and my boyfriend. But others were faster, some would fill 4-5 alone! . It’s really a lot about your attitude. When we arrived in the share house we stayed in we met an English guy who had been picking oranges for months. Even though he said most people would stay for 1-2 weeks and then leave for something better. He was determined to get his 88 days done in the same place. He had spend money getting there, and he even had a bad allergic reaction to the oranges and couldn’t work for the first week he was there and spend a lot of money on medical bills and medication. But his attitude towards the orange picking was stoic, he wouldn’t complain about the hard work.

In early October we were facing different kind of problems. Santos marks weren’t that good, sports had to be done more regularly and the most important thing for me was for Santo to love and accept himself. I didn’t know back then exactly how to motivate him. The selflove thing was the hardest for me to support him. As he wanted a MacBook we set some goals and how to reach them: 1st Goal (red) were his marks. I wrote down what I thought (and still think) he could reach, he wrote down what he thought he could reach and yesterday we wrote what he actually reached. . 2nd goal (green) was to get used to do sports regularly. It was really hard to find a sport he liked. In the end (already since 2018) he started with CrossFit. He had to go minimum twice a week, maximum three times. Also skateboarding was a goal but we haven’t had any more time for that. . 3rd goal (purple) was to love himself as he is. That was rough sometimes but in the end with the hard work he did, he achieved it. . I’m so endlessly proud of this 13 year old teenager. He is more reflective than some adults I know. He developed a different attitude and I love to see him grow to a healthy person. Embrace your children, support them and show them how they can achieve their goals. . He had a lot of private lessons in German with his grandmother, I helped him with maths and presentations. A lot he did by himself and in the end it was him who got up early or went in bed late after all his preparations. . We were arguing a lot sometimes, we were even crying (not so often but we did). From time to time it got frustrating. But now he sees what he had accomplished in the end all by himself. Resilience✨ Hier j'ai reçu un appel. Vous savez ce genre que vous attendez avec impatience depuis des mois et qui pourtant ne vous donne pas la réponse escomptée. Ce genre d'appels qui fait le temps s'arrêter. Plus rien n'existe sauf ce téléphone que vous tenez dans les mains et cette voix à l'autre bout. J'ai pleuré. A chaudes larmes. J'ai été prise au dépourvu et je ne m'attendais pas à une telle réponse. Alors à ce moment là les larmes ont coulé. De rage, de tristesse, de dégoût, de déception, de tout ce stress accumulé qui enfin pouvait lâcher, de peur aussi...et de savoir que j'allais encore devoir me battre. Puis j'ai réfléchi et rapidement, plus rapidement que je ne l'aurai espéré d'ailleurs, j'ai été soulagé. Je me suis mentalement autorisée 5mn de pestage, de ralâge, d'énervement, de victimisation aussi, parce qu'à ce moment là je voulais juste être réconfortée, prise dans les bras et qu'on me plaigne. Je ne voulais pas entendre que tout irait bien, que chaque chose arrive au bon moment pour de bonnes raisons. Je voulais juste qu'on soit de mon côté cette fois, pas comme la réponse que j'avais reçu quelques minutes auparavant. Après quelques respirations type cohérence cardiaque et après m'être autorisé tout cela, mon esprit s'est éclairci. Je crois profondément que les événements de notre vie se produisent pour une bonne raison, qu'il y a toujours du positif à en tirer. Ici n'est pas l'exception. Bien que je ne perçoive pas encore tout, je pense avoir saisi l'essentiel et je fais confiance à l'univers. Bien que des brins de peur subsistent encore, je reste courageuse. Je n'arrêterai que quand J'aurai décidé d'arrêter. Abandonner n'est pas une option. En douceur et bienveillance, pour moi-même déjà, par respect pour ma vie, j'irai jusqu'au bout. So often on days like anniversaries, birthdays or others that can cause painful memories the temptation is to get busy, avoid those feelings and emotions and 'get through it'. __________________________ A client yesterday told me she wanted to avoid the anniversary of her marriage and all thoughts of it, it upset her too much. She wanted to be really busy and work, but had the opportunity to spend the morning at home and was feeling confused and conflicted. __________________________ She knew the emotions needed to come out but had no idea how this could happen. __________________________ Be with them, feel them and let them out. __________________________ I suggested she sat with her feelings, allowed them in and for her to feel them. To give herself permission to grieve, let them out, write them down, go for a walk, get into bed and cry them out and be gentle with herself. __________________________ It is okay to grieve, to be sad at the ending of a relationship or marriage whether your ex ended it or you did. Grieving is an important part of the process, there are days where you may feel it unexpectedly, are triggered. Lotusbloemen zijn prachtige bloemen maar ze leven in het vuilste modder dat je je kan inbeelden. Zonder deze voedzame modder krijgen ze geen bloemen. Wij krijgen groeimomenten vanuit ‘lijden’ en moeilijke periodes in ons leven. Here’s the difference about being a newbie in healthcare verses some other professions... if you screw up, the consequences can be monumental. There are people’s lives at stake. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That’s a lot of pressure, huh? You’re a new nurse. Just graduated. Employers want experience, but you have to actually work to get that, right?! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There’s SO much to learn, and try to keep straight in your brain, and the workplace is so fast paced. It can be intimidating & scary! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Practices and the work environment are constantly changing and evolving. And like we talked about in the previous post - sometimes lots of your peers are just getting their bearings and starting to feel on top of things as well. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I feel very fortunate that I had the opportunity when I was in my last year of nursing school, to have an externship. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I went to school, completed my clinicals during the week, and then on the weekends, I worked in the ICU under the supervision of a preceptor. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It provided me with the opportunity to have a slow-on-ramp experience of adjusting to life as a critical care nurse. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Even then, I remember crying in my car some mornings before work, dreading walking in the door. Hoping I could remember everything I’d learned, not look dumb, and terrified I might screw up. Frankly, I’m not sure if I could hang, if I had to do it now. Even with on boarding classes and 4 months of orientation... that is STILL so much for one person to absorb, and feel safe, confident, and independent when they’re on their own. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So if you’ve been there yourself in the past few years... tell us - what helped make you successful in this process? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What were your most challenging roadblocks? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Are externships hard to find in this current job market? (I know they still exist.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you had experience with a great nurse residency program?
