Feeling it at the end of a busy week! I have been finding it hard to get the kids back into the school routine after the relaxed Christmas period. Similar to me they are resisting normal bedtimes and lack of treats! I have found that in times of stress or struggle with them using a ‘calm down corner’ helpful. Using a breathing ball as a prop and distraction for them to take some long slow breaths can help them... and us! Helping the children to focus in on each individual sense can be difficult, we find using ‘Feely’ bags is a great way to pinpoint the ‘touch’ sense. This week we helped the Big Waves create Mandala’s, they are used for healing, meditation and art therapy in both children and adults. Mandala means ‘circle’ in Sanskrit, by creating a pattern formed from the central circle it encourages focus, calm, mindfulness and healing. Here are Big Waves using straws and bubble blowing to encourage breath awareness. Slow long breaths calm us down and the water bubbles gently. If we breathe fast and quickly we can see the water below becomes rough and often splashes out of the cup. We took our children to the Antony Gormley exhibition @royalacademyarts at the weekend and I would highly recommend it for all ages. They give the children cute little sketch books to draw in and it was a success with all three, even my youngest! It made them all focus on the details of each sculpture and copy them in their book. We focussed on kindness and gratitude this week with both the Big and Little waves. They loved colouring and decorating these heart puzzles. We taught them the loving kindness meditation, teaching them about love, kindness and gratitude helps develop compassion for others, self acceptance and forgiveness. Just the most wonderful session talking about kindness and gratitude. The gratitude crowns were so beautiful; the children wrote they were grateful for family, sunshine, happiness, teachers, ice-cream and so much more. We played a compliment game and it was amazing to watch the children pay each other compliments; such as you’re brave / kind /strong. We spoke about how when we are kind to others our brain produces a hormone called dopamine which makes us feel good, it sure did! Here we are practicing partner boat breathing. Breath awareness is so important and for Little Waves it’s all about using tools to help them to see and feel their breath. Belly breathing is so important to help calm ourselves down, it turns on the parasympathetic nervous system which ‘turns on’ the relaxation response.
